The Meaning of LIFE!

We are at the beginning of a brand new year.  Actually, with all of the challenges and changes in 2004, I have that old Barry Manilow song, “Looks Like We Made It” going around in my head.  And now, thanks to me, you probably have it stuck in yours too! J  But I’d like to use that phrase “we made it” to make a point …

The recent presidential elections showed us that very many in our nation seem to have applied that phrase to our unborn babies.  It’s as if they think, or say, “We made it, so we can get rid of it!”  Nothing really could be further from the truth.  The life that you and I live, the lives that we are privileged to bring into this world, the very life around us – the trees, plants and animals – was not created by us, but instead is given to us, and entrusted to us to care for and to nurture.  All life is created by God, and is given purely as a gift for us to enjoy and experience!

As we BEGIN this new year, I invite you to join me in pondering the “Beginning” of it all.  On January 16th, we will begin (pun intended) a three-week sermon series about LIFE.  We will look at the beginning all life, when “God created the heavens and the earth” (Genesis 1:1).  We will look at the beginning of your life and mine – when God’s “hands shaped me and formed me” (Psalm 119:73). And we will look at the beginning of our new life in Christ for “In Him was life…” (John 1:4).  This series appropriately coincides with the beginning of our new year, but it also coincides with the anniversary of the Supreme Court case “Roe v. Wade” legalizing abortion on January 22, 1973.

Please join me in praying for the unborn, whose lives are just beginning.  Their life is not a possession of any man or woman to decide, but their life belongs to our God, the Creator of Life.  And even though we may not always see it or understand it, EVERY Life has meaning to our Lord!  In His Name.
